Eye injuries are can be disturbing, for the person suffering, for a person witnessing it, for you – the reader and also for me. Not many of us will know the full extent of the injury or recognise it properly. It can then get more problematic when we try to mend it by involuntarily rubbing the eye or trying to apply first aid by removing the nasty intruder.

Here are six common eye injuries and a short guide about what is to be done.

1. Bloodshot Eye(s)

The medical term for such injuries is “Subconjunctival Haemorrhages”. Yes, the words bleeding and haemorrhage sound scary but in truth this form of injury is quite harmless. The appearance is deceiving and can cause panic but you do not require treatment for it. It can be caused by minor injuries and is a result of leakage from one or more blood vessels that are present between the covering and the white part of the eye (read conjunctiva and sclera). It is painless and after a few days the eye will return to its normal state.

2. Traumatic Iritis

Unlike the above this cannot be taken lightly. After a blow from a blunt object, be it a punch or a basketball, or even a poke to the eye, the iris (coloured area) around the pupil suffers from inflammation. Your eye might be dangling on the risk of permanent decrease in vision even after medical treatment.

3. Swelling Around The Eye

This is the puffiness or swelling of the area around the eye after a hit from a ball or another moving object or a punch. Applying an icepack reduces the swelling but it is wise to have a check with the doctor in case the eye has been injured.

4. Corneal Abrasion

This injury is also known as a scratched eye. This abrasion in the pupil can be caused by a mere poke or by the rubbing of the eye while objects like dust or sand are present. Your eye might become severely sensitive to light and it feels very uncomfortable.

Corneal Abrasion can open doors to fungi or bacterial infection as early as 24 hours. This can lead to complete blindness especially in cases of contamination.

Scratches can be from fingernails to branches to paper cuts but it is important not to rub the eye or even patch it. Doing so will either result in worsening of the damage or let the bacteria thrive. Shielding the eye by covering it with a paper cup or simply keeping it closed will help. It must be taken as an emergency situation and a doctor must be consulted right away.

5. Penetration

This situation is similar to corneal abrasion and the same amount of care must be taken. Additionally if the objects are sharp, do not try to remove them yourself and seek medical attention right away.

6. Hyphema (Bleeding in the Eye)

Bleeding in the front (or anterior chamber) of the eye between the cornea and the iris is called a hyphema. Hyphemas, along with orbital fractures, are emergency situations. It is caused by a powerful hit by a ball, a wooden or metal object or a kick.

Having red eyes may be alarming for you, especially when they’re nasty, bloodshot eyes. Basically, eye redness develops when blood vessels in the eye are swollen or dilated.
Having red eyes may be alarming for you, especially when they’re nasty, bloodshot eyes. Basically, eye redness develops when blood vessels in the eye are swollen or dilated. The condition is caused by several factors – some serious, others not so much. If you notice the white part of your eye change its color to pink or red, you might have one of these:

1. Conjunctivitis or Pink Eye

Conjunctivitis, commonly known by most parents as pink eye, is an infection of the membrane that coats the surface of the eye (conjunctiva). Some forms of conjunctivitis, such as those caused by viruses and bacteria are highly contagious and are common in both children and adults. The symptoms include itching, stinging, burning, watering red eyes.

What to do: Wash your hands often and avoid rubbing or touching your eyes. Do not share towels, washcloths or pillows with family members. If you want immediate relief, use cool compresses on the outside of the closed eyelids. It is best to see the eye doctor for possible treatment.

2. Allergies

Allergies are one of the primary causes of red eyes. This usually occurs during spring and fall or when an allergen enters the eyes. Allergens can be anything irritating, ranging from fumes and cat hair to pollen and molds. Symptoms of eye allergy include glassy, swollen, puffy and itchy eyes.

What to do: Over closed eyelids, pat cold, wet compresses. Rinsing the eyes also prove helpful for a number of people. Over-the-counter oral antihistamines and eye drops can relieve the redness too. If the allergy continues, you may visit your eye doctor for a prescription.

Stock photo from inmagine.com

3. Eye Injury

Did sand or dust get in your eyes? Foreign objects that enter the eye cause irritation and redness, along with blurred vision and pain. Tears usually flush the foreign object out while dilated blood vessels heal the possible injury caused by the object. However, if you get hit in the eye, there could also be unseen but serious damage. See your eye doctor right away.

What to do: For foreign objects, saline eye drops are best. For injury, cold compresses may help. If you’re eye doctor isn’t available, go to an emergency room for immediate check up.

4. Eye Strain

Extended computer use, reading for long periods, exposure to bright light or glare, watching television and long drives are some causes of eye strain. A bad viewing angle, low light levels, fatigue, stress, less sleeping hours and alcohol use are additional factors that contribute to the condition.

What to do: There are several exercises that can reduce eye strain. Palming, blinking, visual scanning and eye aerobics are some examples. One eye aerobic exercise is rolling the eyes ten times to the left, then another ten times to the right.

5. Broken Blood Vessel

Tiny blood vessels in the eye sometimes break because of heavy lifting, sneezing, rubbing, constipation or taking blood thinning medication. The outcome: alarming red eyes. Despite its scary appearance, this is usually harmless and not considered an emergency.

What to do: Stop all straining activities and stop taking blood thinners. To be on the safe side, go to your eye doctor for check up within a day or two after the symptoms appear.

Travelling can throw up many challenges, one of those that many people can easily overlook is looking after your eyes. Different environments and varying conditions can be a problem, especially if you have sensitive eyes. The last thing you need is to have to use your medical insurance whilst you’re abroad.

Here are some tips for making sure your eyes stay healthy when you’re travelling abroad.

Avoid direct sunlight

Sunlight can be extremely harmful to your eyes so sunglasses are a very good idea. You need to have glasses that protect you from 100% of UVA and UVB rays.

If you are in a tropical country or countries that have strong sunlight you can also get sun exposure when the skies are cloudy. Protect your eyes from the sun at all times, whether that means wearing sunglasses or a hat with a wide rim, its important.

Avoid looking directly into the sunlight. Sunlight can be extremely damaging to your eyes when you look directly into it. Avoid this especially if you are using zoom lenses on cameras, binoculars or a telescope.

The best times to avoid direct sunlight are between 10am and 2pm as the sun is strongest then, but a good rule is just to avoid it at all times. The sun can always be harmful so avoidance is the best ploy.

Be quick to seek medical attention

If you suffer an eye injury make sure you consult a medical professional quickly. They will know how serious your injury is and be able to determine the treatment you will need, whether it be immediately or if can wait until you arrive home.

There are specific symptoms that you shouldn’t leave and should have checked out immediately. If you have eye pain, your eyes are red, you have double vision, there is a scratch on your eye or your eye is bleeding you need to seek medical treatment.

Of course it might not be particularly easy when you’re abroad and you might not know the correct procedures but you shouldn’t let that deter you from seeking medical advice.

Allergic reactions

When you travel you are exposed to different environments than you would be back home. The plants and pollen levels are different. This could irritate your eyes causing them to be itchy and uncomfortable. This is probably one of the most common eye conditions when travelling.

You can buy over the counter medicines such as eye drops to help relieve the symptoms. Its best not to leave particularly irritated eyes as they normally won’t get any better if you are allergic to your new environment. Medicines can be effective so find a local pharmacy that can help you choose the right treatment.

Dry eyes

Dry eyes can be a problem when you are abroad. Whilst travelling in aeroplanes or in buildings with air conditioning systems the low humidity can give you dry eyes.

You can try to get a humidifier in your hotel room if the air is dry. If you have control of your air conditioning, turn it down as much as is bearable, especially at night.

These are a few of the simple precautions you can take that will help you maintain your eye health when you are abroad. You can prepare before you go away such as buying good sunglasses or a good hat, maybe even stocking up with antihistamines if you know you are prone to allergic reactions.

One of the most important senses that we have is our vision. We take it for granted by working too long at the computer, going out without sunglasses and not getting regular eye exams. We only have two eyes and we certainly want them to be at the peak of their performance for as long as they can.

There are several precautions that you can take to keep your eyes safe:

Regular Check-ups

Sun Protection

Safety Goggles

Proper Cleansing

Relieve Eye Strain

Moisturize

An Apple a Day

While eating healthy and living a healthy lifestyle is great you still need to get regular checkups. Your eye doctor will be able to detect eye issues early. This could prevent macular degeneration and glaucoma. Children should see a physician for regular checkups before the age of five to diagnose lazy eye or misaligned eyes.

Look Cool

Not only do sunglasses help prevent fine lines but they help save your eyes from sun damage. When UVA and UVB rays hit, the blue rays of the spectrum can cause eye damage. The best sunglasses have brown or amber tones to fight the blue. You want to be sure that the glasses protect from both UVA and UVB damage. Be sure that the glasses are polycarbonate as these are tougher and can take more of a beating while keeping your child's eyes safe.

Safety First

When we were all in Science class we learned to protect our eyes with safety goggles. If you work with heavy machinery, in a dusty environment, with gasses and even around the house when simply putting up a shelf you should be wearing plastic safety goggles. Also, when you’re playing sports safety goggles or sport sunglasses should be worn. Imagine taking a soccer ball or hockey puck to the eye, serious damage can occur. Get yourself and your children tinted safety goggles for sports. Your eyes will come out the winner.

Rubbing It Makes It Worse

If you have a grain of sand in your eye and you rub it you can create scratching on the cornea. When an allergen gets into your eye you should rinse the eye, do not rub it. You should try to do your best to let the water run over the eye and wash out the particle.

Look Away From the Computer

When you stare at a screen all day your eyes can get dry and fatigued. Practice looking away from the computer at an object in the distance that is 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. The 20, 20, 20 trick will help relieve strain. If your eyes are dry you should blink slowly 20 times. You want to lubricate the eye with its natural oils to prevent dry eye.

Soak it Up

If you have chronic dry eye you should look for a proper moisturizer. Vents for air conditioning or heat can cause you to have dry office and can cause your child’s school to be dry. Having the right wetting drops will keep your eyes moist and healthy.

Diet

Along with these tips it is healthy for the eyes to have a proper diet. Foods rich in Omega 3 such as salmon are great for renewing the oils in the eye, as well as your hair and rest of the body. Your family deserves to see well for a long, long time.

If you are experiencing more difficult eye issues you should speak with a specialist as your issue may be treated by laser eye surgery. You only have two eyes, take care of them.

If you’ve ever purchased a pair of glasses you understand how expensive they can be. The glasses that you choose say a lot about you and your style. You can look fun and funky, sexy, smart, retro or have glasses that simply disappear on the face if they are rimless. Once you find the perfect pair of glasses you should take care of them.

Everyday Motion

When you take your glasses off and put them on, grab them by both arms. It may be fun to whimsically pull off your glasses from one side of your face as you dramatically turn to someone, however, there are very few times when this is actually a motion that you need to make. When you take your glasses off you should use both arms in order to prevent stretching and warping of the arms.

Forget What Your Mum Taught You

It’s nice to share, but don’t share your glasses. Not only can you spread germs this way and damage your own eyes looking through someone else’s prescription but your glasses can be stretched out. When you order glasses they’re custom fit to you. No one else has the same nose to ear to eye ratio as you. Letting your best friend try on your glasses is like letting them try on your favourite jeans – they could stretch them out.

Use Water

When you clean your glasses use a soft cloth and a little bit of water. The water will rinse the large particles and prevent scratching. Lenses are one of the most expensive elements of the glasses and it would be a shame to scratch them.

Or get yourself a lens cleaning kit with a cleaning solution spray and a soft micro-fibre cleaning cloth for everyday usage.

Keep Them Safe in a Case

Glasses take a beating, especially children’s glasses. When you take them off, where do your put them? On a table, in your pocket, did you forget? Glasses should always be stored in a case. There are two types of cases for your frames:

Soft glasses cases

Hard glasses cases

The Tougher of the Two

Hard cases are always recommended for children and people who are not so easy on their things. Hard cases will hold the shape of your glasses and keep them from getting crushed. If you’re the type to take off your glasses and throw them into your bag then the easy choice is a hard case.

Night Time Storage

If you only take your glasses off at night and you place them on a dresser you can get a softer case. A soft case will protect your glasses from dust and perhaps the occasional fall off the counter.

Not On Your Head

If you are prone to taking your glasses on and off do not store them on your head. Use a chain on your glasses and wear them around your neck. Pushing them up on your head can stretch out the arms and distort the frames.

Stay Out of the Sun

If you use a pair of glasses to protect your eyes from the sun or help you see the road signs but you take them off when you get where you are going do not leave the glasses on the dashboard of the car. The sun can heat the plastic of the frames and distort the shape. Place your glasses in a hard case and keep them in the glove box or centre console.

When you take care of your glasses you should have them for as long as your prescription is up to date. If you like your frames all you will need are new lenses. Be sure that you are not looking through cracked spectacles.

Sunglasses have always been one of those fashion accessories that have always looked cool, no matter what. Of course, there are some people that maybe can not pull off the sunglass look, but it is very rare. But, sunglasses are not just for fashion, they are also highly beneficial to the health of the eyes.

The history of sunglasses go back all the way to ancient China, and you can bet your britches that they were not worried about what looked fashionable and cool and hip way back then. Instead, the earliest forms of sunglasses – which were made of smoked quartz – were used primarily to block the sun, and its harmful rays, from the eyes. This turned out to be a smart idea, even though the smoked quartz did not protect the eyes from the harmful ultra violet rays of the sun, they were a step in the right direction.

In Australia, the sun shines bright for most of the year, and thus there are higher than average rates of eye cataracts and other conditions that can be associated with sun exposure. Sunglasses do a lot to protect the eyes from the harmful ultra violet rays of the sun, and in Australia that is key – especially as the effects of not protecting your eyes become obvious as you start getting older. It is not common knowledge about all the health benefits that come from the use of a good pair of sunglasses, but there are many. Here are a few of the health benefits one can receive from the regular use of sunglasses:

Health Benefit 1 – Cataracts

Studies have shown time and time again that sunglasses protect the eyes from developing cataracts, which are cloudy areas that develop inside the eye with age and lead to poor eyesight or complete blindness. The sun commonly causes cataracts, especially for people who have light colored eyes like blue and green colored eyes.

Health Benefit 2 – Photokeratitis

This ailment is essentially the equivalent of having a sunburn on your eyes. Sunglasses block against this ailment, which can lead to long-term damage to the eyes, which is not good by any measure. The ailment itself is only temporary, but long-term exposure to harmful UV rays will damage the eyes in numerous ways.

Health Benefit 3 – Pinguecula

This is a non-cancerous growth that can develop in the eyes due to long exposures to the sun and the harmful UV rays that it produces. It is more prevalent in people who live in dry climates than in others, but it is still common throughout the entire world. Sunglasses do a lot to protect the eyes from this growth, as well as other similar cancerous growths that happen because of the same reason.

You need to be very careful when it comes to shopping for sports eyewear because these items can be quite expensive. True, you can find a number of cheaper and affordable options; however, they might not be able to offer the same level of quality as some of the top brands on the market. It is not really advisable to just merely purchase the first type of eyewear that you see because it may not suit your preferences and needs. And if you are not careful enough, the sports glasses or eyewear may not even last for several uses. This is certainly a familiar scenario for those who tend to be impulsive buyers. Here are a few tips that you should consider when buying the best kind of sports eyewear for your needs.

Set a Budget

Sports eyewear and glasses come in a wide variety of brands, models and prices. Therefore, you have to determine how much you are willing to spend before you start to search for a specific brand. Of course, the cheapest ones are those that come from lesser known manufacturers, while the most expensive ones also come from the most reliable and trusted brands in the sports eyewear market such as Oakley, Bolle, Arnette, Cebe and the like.

It would be advisable to start searching for the average prices of these sports glasses and eyewear to get an idea of how much you should spend. You can go to various high streets or malls and retailers in your area that offer these items and check out their prices. But if you want a convenient way to shop, you should search for these items online because you can easily see their prices at a single glance.

Look for Quality

The best brands will always focus on customer satisfaction; therefore, they make sure that their products suit the requirements and needs of their customers. So if you truly want to be guaranteed about the quality of a particular product, you should always check out the brand. Some of the top brands even offer a satisfaction guarantee with 2-year warranties to assure their customers that the eyewear and glasses come with high quality and durable materials. Although most of these brands offer higher rates and prices, they are usually worth the money. Most of these items even last for several years, especially when properly maintained. Other brands may claim to be more economical, but they would just be a waste of money in the long run.

Look for Products that Enhance Your Performance

If you are very serious with a particular sport or activity, it is very important to look for the best type of eyewear that also matches your needs. Some of these specialized glasses can even help you improve your performance and prevent any eye injuries. Before you make a final purchase, it would be best to speak with a sales representative who knows the various types of sports eyewear and glasses. You can also read some forums and reviews online about the best sports eyewear models that are suitable for a certain sport.

This weekend is St. Patrick's Day… We don't really need an excuse to get down the local watering hole, but its definitely a great occasion for it.

First, a condensed history of St Patrick’s Day

It’s in honour of Patrick, a wealthy Roman-British teenager who was kidnapped and sold as a slave in Ireland in the fourth century.

He escaped back to Britain and studied to be a priest.

He felt called back to Ireland as an evangelist. According to folklore, he used the shamrock to explain the doctrine of the Trinity to the Irish people.

He died on 17 March with nary a pint of Guinness or the colour green in sight.

As you can see, we like to keep things rather irreverent at OmniOptics. In line with that, we reckon that if St Patrick himself were alive today, he would probably have adorned himself with some Ray-Ban RB2132 New Wayfarers in fetching green, just like the ones below. Wayfarers are great, because they seem so adaptable and go with any outfit.

St Patrick’s Day around the world

Here’s a brief glance at how people around the world celebrate St Patrick’s Day – with glasses, of course.

Our all-time favourite must be these shamrock sunglasses, taken at a St Patrick’s Day parade in Dublin, Ireland.

They celebrate in style in New Zealand with Guinness and sunglasses

And get a glasses-full of this fella, taken at a St Patrick’s Day event in London.

Even kids are getting in on the celebrations with this massive glasses.

Enjoy St Patrick’s Day with these festive green sunglasses

Keep your cool and enjoy St Patrick’s Day with our range of green sunglasses in popular styles.

Women, get some instant celeb style with this green colour VE4188 Audrey Hepburn style Versace sunglasses.

Men can do the same with these green Burberry BE4106 sunglasses.

Or you and your other half could go one step further and don these unisex Rudy Project Kalyos Golf sunglasses. Strictly speaking, these are golf lenses for the local Pitch & Putt, but we won't tell anyone if you don't.

No post on St Patrick’s Day would be complete without reference to Ireland’s most famous glasses-wearing export, Bono, seen here wearing his familiar shield style sunglasses in green. Bono usually favours his own Emporio Armani Product Red Sunglasses, but he is also a big fan of the Bvlgari brand.

Happy St Patrick’s Day and go easy on the Guinness!

Oakley's star tennis player Sam Stosur dominated Serena Williams on the American's home turf to win the US Open at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York on Sunday. Australian, Sam Stosur beat Serena Williams in just two sets – 6-2, 6-3 to win her first-ever Grand Slam tournament (the final one of the year). Here's hoping this is the first of many, for Australia's new favourite sporting hero.

Sam Stosur is one of the few tennis players on the tour who can often be seen wearing sunglasses on court, her sunnies of choice tend to be the sporty Enduring Edge model as seen in these images. Sam will often change the colour of the model she wears to suit her mood, style or the tournament she is playing in.

Oakley Enduring Edge shield-style sunglasses are great for sports as the single lens can be changed to suit the lighting conditions or the type of sport being played. The fit is designed specifically for women and includes two sizes of nosepieces that can be easily changed. The Three-Point Fit holds the frames firmly in place making them perfect for the fast pace and quick direction changes required on the tennis court.

Movie synopsis from Apple.com:-
"This is not just another mission. The IMF is shut down when it's implicated in a global terrorist bombing plot. Ghost Protocol is initiated and Ethan Hunt and his rogue new team must go undercover to clear their organization's name. No help, no contact, off the grid. You have never seen a mission grittier and more intense than this."

We were lucky enough to see the latest trailer from this action packed movie and as expected Tom Cruise is again wearing Oakley sunglasses (as he did for the other Mission Impossible movies!) during one scene where he scales the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. We've identified these Oakleys to be a custom designed Oakley Wind Jacket with a clear frame and clear lenses.

Unfortunately these are not available for purchase at this time but the standard Wind Jackets are – hopefully Oakley will add this option to their collection in due course!

Movie synopsis from Apple:-
A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.
